Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity is grateful to Gulf Power for their support of the Morris Avenue project via the Community Contribution Tax Credit Program (CCTCP). This program provides a financial incentive (50% tax credit) to encourage Florida businesses to make donations toward community development and housing projects of low-income persons.

The tax credit is easy for a business to receive. Corporations located anywhere in Florida that make donations to an approved community development project may receive a tax credit equal to 50% of the value of the donation. Businesses may take the credit on Florida corporate income tax, franchise tax, insurance premium tax, or sales and use tax.

How well do you know Habitat for Humanity? ​​​​​​Like most charities, there are some surprising misconceptions about our organization. Let’s dispel the three most common myths about Habitat for Humanity.

1. Myth: Jimmy Carter started Habitat for Humanity. Truth: He didn’t start the organization, but he is arguably our most famous volunteer. Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter have been involved with the organization since March 1984.

2. Myth: Because volunteers help us build homes  and we receive donated items it doesn’t cost us anything to build a house.  Truth: In Jackson and Washington counties, we need to raise $80,000 for every house we build.  ​​​​​​​

3. Myth: Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity gives our houses away.  Truth: This couldn’t be further from the truth: Our homeowners pay mortgages and during the construction process, also contribute ‘sweat equity’ during the construction of their homes and those of others.  ​​​​​​​

So how does the Habitat process work?  Through five equally important steps.

1. FUND: Donations from community companies, individuals, and faith groups fund Habitat home construction.

2. BUILD: Volunteers and homebuyers build homes, often with donated materials and labor.

3. EDUCATE: Financial education courses prepare families for homeownership.

4. BUY: Homebuyers purchase homes with favorable financing terms.

5. REINVEST: All mortgage payments are reinvested back into the program.

Through this model, Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity is able to continue to provide safe, affordable housing for families in need, a mission we are honored to uphold.

After a successful volunteer day dedicated to laying sod, construction is wrapping up the homes on both Booker Street and Oak Street in Marianna.  Appliances are  installed, final inspections are done and we’re waiting on appraisals—it’s always exciting as we get so close to home dedications!
